Show Notes

Today’s guest on this episode of The Culture of Things is Dr. Wilma Slenders. She is an expert management consultant with many years of experience in helping leaders realise their potential and better themselves through empathy and change management in their businesses.

We explore the idea of Lifetime Employability versus Lifelong employment and how that affects the mindset and work ethic of employees. This again, has a direct impact on the culture of an organisation. They discuss how important it is for leaders to see their actions through the eyes of their employees in order to ensure that they make decisions that will benefit the company as a whole - including all its employees.

This episode is packed with brilliant examples that explain the reasoning behind the theories and on top of that, Dr. Slenders shares some really exciting news about her upcoming book.

67. Ex-Google Employee Shares Culture Perspective

Taras Kobernyk is humble, professional, and articulate.  That’s what makes his intriguing situation and actions much more believable.  After being fired by Google for questioning some of their policies on diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism, Taras found it quite difficult to find another job. When asked why he wrote his now-famous document “Questions about Google’s anti-racism actions,” he says he just wanted to start a conversation, just wanted to point out some contradictory, hypocritical behaviors and sentiments that Google leadership was pushing on its employees, particularly on software engineers like himself.  Google’s continued refusal (or inability) to address these points has not wavered since the document was released and began a very public media blitz on the subject. Join me as we talk to Taras about his experiences– from his excitement about moving to the U.S. from Ukraine, getting hired by such a massive tech giant, and the subsequent disintegration of his time there, leading to his being fired for questioning Google leadership on some tough topics. Discussion Points Taras’ introduction/background Getting hired by Google and finding out the internal downsides to his position What did you see that made you write the document? How did things go after writing it? Can you detail the timeline from the writing of the initial document, through your firing? Were you ever told your performance was subpar? How would you respond to people who think you’re simply a disgruntled former employee? What can you tell us about ...

Primal Video has evolved into a multi-six-figure automation-driven business, and they now help others (I am a client myself) implement the same approach through their Primal Video Accelerator program. Discussion Points The humble beginnings: making videos simply to help people What was the “penny drop” moment for you and Mike? Tell us about your early days, and is there an end game? How has a piece of “brutal” feedback actually helped you improve your videos? Justin explains how they hire using Meyers-Briggs and other personality tests to get the right fit Extreme ownership and integrity  Justin and Mike’s partnership and how it functions ...

EP42. How to Design a Kindness Culture

Randy McNeely lives and breathes kindness and he has dedicated his life to sharing ways to be kind and getting a culture of kindness engrained into organisations. Randy has written a book on the topic of kindness called “The Kindness Givers Formula” and in it, he shares how acts of kindness have the powerful ability to change people’s day (and even change lives in some instances).  In this episode, Brendan chats to Randy about his journey into teaching individuals and organisations to leverage kindness to improve their world and the world of people around them. They go into how being kind, actually has the power to make the person being kind, feel good. Yes, scientific evidence that shows that kindness literally goes both ways. Being kind is easier than it may seem in the moment and the more you look for opportunities to be kind, the more such opportunities will tend to arise. This will, in turn, mean cultivating a Circle of Kindness and positivity all around you. So whether it’s in your business or personal life, Randy reminds us about the BIG impact a small act of kindness can have.  Randy is truly passionate about his mission to get the world to become a kinder place - and boy, we can all do with a kinder world, right? Discussion Points: Meaning of PEPOK Why Randy values Kindness Memorable moments of kindness The Meaning of Chief kindness officer Practical Actions:  Kindness by Design, The Circle of Kindness Kindness Givers Formula ...
